Motivational Interviewing
Food for the Hungry International (FHI) has adapted Motivational Interviewing (MI), originally developed for counselling by Dr. William Miller and Dr. Stephen Rollnick, for use in developing countries, focusing on behaviour changes including abstinence from sexual activity before marriage and faithfulness in marriage to protect individuals from contracting HIV. Information about correct and consistent use of condoms is provided to individuals who do not choose to be abstinent or faithful.
The materials posted on the FHI MI website are intended for use by anyone wishing to train others in MI for use in behaviour change programmes. FHI is a Christian evangelical organisation: therefore, the materials contain some reference to Christian religious beliefs. However, these materials could be easily adapted for use with other religious or secular groups.
The website contains both 2005 and updated 2006 materials in MS Word format, MS PowerPoint, and Windows Zip format, as well as a recorded training section, and includes:
- Trainer's Manual
- Trainer's Slides
- Alternate MI Family Planning Skit
- MI Coaching Cards
- MI Memory Sheet (Long Version)
- MI Pre/Post-Test Questions
- Participants' Manual
- Condensed Participants' Manual
- Stages of Change Scenario Cards
- MI Process Part II Steps
- MI Memory Sheet (Short Version)
- All 2006 Training Materials (in a single file)
