Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Commitments - Girls Summit 2014

An important strategic communication element of the Girls Summit 2014 was to encourage people and organise to decide and share the commitments that they would make in order to help significantly reduce and remove FGM and child, early and forced marriage. The full list of commitments one year on can be reviewed here

Some communication related commitments include: 

  • ECPAT - By early-2015, all member organisations of the ECPAT Network working directly with victims of CEFM will be encouraged to consult with victims in order to bring their voices into the formulation of legislation and action
  • HACEP-Ghana - we are committed to providing safe and inclusive community spaces where girls and women can develop and raise their voices.
  • Oxfam - We will further integrate work on sexual and reproductive health rights within our My Rights My Voice programme
  • UNICEF - Using social media and other communication tools to elevate the voices of girls themselves and engage men and boys to bring about change
  • Women and Law in Southern Africa Research and Education Trust (WLSA) - Strengthening the voice and rights of women and girls in WLSA countries to contribute to the effective fight against FGM and CEFM (including): Increased access to accurate information and justice for women and girls in WLSA countries; and, Increased public discourse and debate on national policies, laws and end FGM and CEFM.
  • World Shrine Ministries -  Helping mobilize action by young people, families, communities, and civil society groups to end FGM/C and child marriage by the voice of women radio programs
  • Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association - distribution of national literature, anti-FGM discussion groups and workshops, awareness and public media campaigns
  • Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE), Bangladesh - Carry out media advocacy
  • Dasra (India) - work towards mainstreaming the issue of child marriage in the Indian popular media
  • Forum for the Development of Young People, Sierra Leone - We will undertake a mass advocacy campaign on the electronic media about how we can end FGM and Early Child marriage.
  • Government of Bangladesh - Actively engage the civil society, media, communities, young people, businesses and other actors in a Social Responsibility Compact
