Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

"If you use digital technologies to create content addressing socially relevant issues, this could be your chance to bring your project to a stage of global recognition."

The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) is an annual competition for digital and social innovators under 30. The international contest tracks and connects e-content developers and social entrepreneurs by selecting and promoting projects such as websites, mobile applications, and online campaigns that are contributing to the achievement of the United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Young people from all over the world developing online platforms with the aim of making the world a better place are invited to participate in this initiative, which is being promoted in all UN member states. The WSYA categories are the following:

  1. Fight poverty, hunger, and disease
  2. Education for all
  3. Power 2 women
  4. Create your culture
  5. Go green
  6. Pursue truth

An international jury composed of young experts, social activists, entrepreneurs, and representatives of the private sector and different international institutions will evaluate the projects and select 18 winners (3 winners and 2 runners-up in each category). At the winners' event (which, in 2013, took place in Colombo, Sri Lanka; the location of 2014's event is yet to be announced), WSYA winners have the opportunity to present their projects on a world stage, exchange ideas with their peers, and network with experts in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) for development. Winning the WSYA allows young social entrepreneurs to become part of an international network of young people, leaders of the ICT industry, academics, govermental organisations, and members of the civil society. Please note: This award is not a cash award.
