Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
Published by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), this field guide provides an overview on how to assess rural people's communication needs and how to plan and implement communication for development (ComDev) activities in the context of disaster risk management, crisis preparedness, and emergency response in agriculture, food security, and nutrition. It also provides guidance on how to apply ComDev to enhance the overall participatory planning and results monitoring processes within Agricultural Disaster Risk Management (ADRM), ensuring multi-stakeholder dialogue and participation.
As stated in the guide, "reducing risk and increasing resilience to natural disasters and climate change requires access to knowledge, information and the active participation of vulnerable population." This field guide was produced to orient ADRM teams and concerned stakeholders about the design and implementation of ComDev activities intended to increase resilience and protect the livelihoods of rural communities. It builds on experiences gained in the Caribbean region as a result of FAO projects working to strengthen preparedness for natural disasters and improve community-based climate change adaptation.
The guide contains the following chapters:
  • About the field guide
  • Communication and agricultural disaster risk management - including integrating ComDev in ADRM planning
  • ComDeV steps in the ADRM Process - 5 phases from situational analysis to monitoring and evaluation
