Strengthening Media Response to HIV/AIDS - Mozambique
Initiated in 2001, Strengthening Media Response to HIV/AIDS is an ongoing project working with national and local radio staff in Mozambique to improve radio programmes on HIV/AIDS. The project was developed in Mozambique in partnership with the National AIDS Council (CNCS) to help counter ignorance of HIV/AIDS in the country through the mass media.
Communication Strategies
The first year's activities included working with radio broadcasters in 6 provinces. Four training workshops were held for broadcasters to review their progress and learn from their peers. Five listener surveys focussed on attitudes toward HIV/AIDS and radio listening preferences have been carried out to inform communication interventions. Radio managers have been addressed to encourage them to fully support and participate in the process. HIV/AIDS programmes are regularly broadcast in 13 indigenous languages.
In 2004, the project organisers turned their attention to northern Mozambique, and to radio programming for young people. One project, funded by the Danish government (DANIDA) involves young people making radio programmes on HIV/AIDS and related social issues for their peers.
