Key Points
South Africa is one of the most inequitable societies in the world. There are huge disparities between rich and poor; "a first world tertiary hospital stands side by side with clinics that lack basic infrastructure, running water and a regular supply of drugs". The Equity Gauge was a project initiated by the South African government to research the state of health of all South Africans, make available the statistics and information collected and to promote a health care system that accounts for differences in economic status, race and gender.
