Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

From the Publisher
Throughout the world, the media is used in various ways to promote social awareness and initiate social development. Of all the available means of communication, radio is still the one with the maximum reach in most developing countries. This book, the first in a three-book series titled "Communication for Behaviour Change", offers extremely practical guidance on how to design, write, and produce radio dramas aimed at motivating social change.

Written by a leading teacher and long-time practitioner of Entertainment–Education, this book provides complete and hands-on instructions for creating successful radio serial dramas for behaviour change. The text is interspersed with examples which show how entertainment and education have been woven together to create awareness programs that are both popular and effective.

Divided into three parts, the book begins by introducing the concept of Entertainment–Education and its use in radio serial drama. It goes on to describe the duties of the program manager of such projects, and concludes with valuable tips for drama writers. Right from the design workshop stage to the process of scriptwriting and script review, from the finer points of pilot testing and choosing production houses to training and directing radio actors, every single aspect that needs to be taken into account is clearly explained.
