Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

This article describes how state administrative officials in India are using polio success stories to encourage people to become involved and participate in polio immunisation drives. Volunteers from different fields, including village Pradhans (leaders), non-governmental organisations and education officials are being awarded appreciation certificates to acknowledge their positive contribution to the Pulse Polio campaign.

The article describes one particular success story where a village Pradhan involved members of his village in the January 2007 Pulse Polio campaign. In Bahadurpur and Sultanpur, areas known for opposition to health immunisation workers, the Pradhan and his members traveled from house to house explaining the importance of the oral polio vaccine to parents. According to the article, all 250 children listed by health workers were present on the first day of the Pulse Polio campaign, making the Pradhan’s efforts a complete success.

Health officials are using the success stories of Bhadurpur and Sultanpur to involve other village Pradhans in immunisation drives to help raise awareness about the importance of the polio campaign.
