Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Founded in 2004 by three United States (US) children with a common vision of helping youth around the globe work together toward the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Lil' MDGs uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) and face-to-face interactions in an effort to provide youth with opportunities to get involved and have a direct impact on achieving development goals.

Communication Strategies

The Lil' MDGs website provides various tools, such as a sample MDG press release and sample letter to a parliamentarian ("Writing a letter to tell your government representative that you care about the Millennium Development Goals being achieved in your country is a good way of getting your voice heard.")

Amongst Lil' MDG projects described on the website is this one: Lil' MDGs members participated in USA Weekend magazine and HandsOn Network's 21st annual Make a Difference Day, a national volunteer day on Oct. 22 2011. Lil' MDGs chapters in 30 states organised a variety of events to mobilise youth to take action to help others. Events included a "Go Without Shoes" challenge asking participants to shed their footwear and also bring in a new pair of shoes to donate to those in need.
