Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

Walking directions are available on Google maps for 44 African countries. Google maps are internet-available maps published by geographic location and regularly updated, including through user input. In 2010, Google developed driving directions on Google Maps in many African countries. "This is a feature that allows users to get driving direction information from one location to another (e.g from Kotoka International Airport to Hotel Novotel in Victoria Borg, Accra in Ghana)." In recognition that not everyone drives, the developers added walking directions.

"To get walking directions, start by doing one of the following:

Click Get directions, enter a starting and ending location and click Get Directions.
In the search field, enter a from-to statement (example: from Nyayo House to Anniversary Towers) and click Search Maps.
Click "Directions" in an info window that pops up for a business or location
Right-click on the map to get directions to that location"

Google states that "walking directions are currently in beta, and we recommend that you use caution, as the routes may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian crossings. Walking directions are editable, so if anything is amiss, you can correct it with our community mapping tool Google Map Maker. Google Map Maker is a tool that allows you to add and update geographic information for millions of users to see in Google Maps and Google Earth."
