Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Empowering Messages - What You Should Know: Strategic Communication and Gender-based Violence

1 comment
SummaryText
This 96-page guide contains guidelines designed to be a comprehensive resource specifically addressing the development and implementation of communication for issues related to gender-based violence. It addresses core concepts such as understanding your intended audience and how to approach monitoring and evaluation. The guidelines are a tool for those involved in work against gender-based violence. They include additional resources to assist readers in developing their communication when more detail or examples are required.

The guidelines were produced after a study of communications in South Africa and Namibia, including media campaigns and the resources that already exist. In order to meet some of the needs identified through these studies, the guidelines include:
  • a 10-step plan to follow for producing a communication strategy;
  • how to go about researching intended audiences to produce the right message;
  • understanding behavioural change and its relation to the intended audience; and
  • monitoring and evaluation (M&E) planning and techniques appropriate to gender-focused communications.
