Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Martínez, O. A. M. (2012). "Effects on school attendance of the oportunidades program scholarships. The case of the urban zones at northeast Mexico." Efectos de las becas educativas del programa oportunidades sobre la asistencia escolar. El caso de la zona urbana del noreste de México(69): 99-131.

METHODS: Conditional transfer programs (CCT), as Mexico's Oportunidades, focus on three basic components: education, health and nutrition. In the former, one of its aims is to reduce truancy, which is generated in contexts of poverty by the employment of children, for this reason the economic resource given by the program seeks to increase school attendance. This study evaluated the impact of the program in reducing absence from school, using a Propensity Score Matching.

FINDINGS: The results show that the program did not generate impacts on school absenteeism, as from before intervention were high school indicators in urban areas that were studied.
