Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Directory of Peace Studies in Africa

This directory is a result of a continental-wide survey conducted over the two years prior to its publication, targeting established institutions in Africa. Included is feedback from participating institutions on existing programmes in the field of peace studies in terms of teaching, research and community service.

The directory is intended to be easily shared and disseminated among institutions and individuals as a viable reference tool. A “readily accessible and modifiable” database has been compiled covering 121 departments in 109 institutions in 34 African countries. The countries are listed in alphabetical order. The UPEACE Africa Programme and ACCORD mailed a letter and questionnaire to 361 academic institutions and 97 non-governmental organisations across Africa.

For each institution listed, data is supplied under the following headings:
  • Region
  • Type
  • Last survey done (i.e. year last surveyed)
  • Address, phone , fax, website
  • Department/unit
  • Taught in (i.e. language)
  • Contact person, their language, phone and fax numbers, and email
  • Peace-related themes in general courses
  • Specific peace-related modules, courses, training
  • Certificates/diplomas awarded
  • Research (areas of research and publications)
  • Community service; and
  • Additional information
