Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Communication for Development - A Practical Guide

Author

SummaryText

This manual, produced in Spanish, "Comunicación para el Desarrollo: Una Guía Práctica (Communication for Development - A Practical Guide)" reaffirms the importance of communication to support development processes and social change in Latin America. It was developed by the Red de Comunicadores en Latinoamérica (Redcolatina - Network of Communicators in Latin America) de la Cooperación Suiza (COSUDE - of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation - SDC). It is written for programmes and projects sponsored by SDC, but it can be very used by other national and international organisations.

The manual presents communication for development (C4D) as a cross-cutting activity for all donors. It provides a conceptual framework, guidance for systematic planning, and a series of tools and concrete examples intended for designing effective communication.

The manual consists of three chapters: 1) Communication for development - laying the foundations; 2) The C4D in the project cycle; and 3) Best practices in C4D (examples from Central America, Colombia, Bolivia, Cuba, Haiti, and Peru).
