Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
The "Community Radio - The People's Voice" handbook aims to offer guidelines on setting up, managing, and sustaining a community radio station.

The manual looks at how community radio can be used as a tool in social and economic transformation, and how it can fill the gap between the public and commercial broadcasters, especially at the grassroots level.

This manual is meant to be a reference tool, and offers theoretical and concrete principles to anyone involved in or wishing to be a part of community radio and its role in rebuilding civil society from the ground up.

The handbook:
  • Explores the differences and similarities between commercial and community radio stations, explaining the unique position of community radio in South Africa, and highlighting its role as a tool for development.
  • Offers extensive guidelines on how to manage a community radio station, and outlines the roles that each employee or volunteer plays in the station.
  • Explores issues relating to effective and ethical reporting.
  • Shows how community radio is pivotal to educating people about their human rights.
  • Details the main processes in producing programmes on a minimum budget.
  • Outlines the serious issue of sustainability and offers guidelines on working toward making your community radio station sustainable.

Thank you very much for this page. I am from the Philippines and we are just starting the empowerment of community people in making community radio work, This material will help us a lot.

By the way, you have a clerical error her, particularly the title for Chapter Three.
