Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Community-based family planning (CBFP) brings family planning information and services to women and men in the communities where they live. The K4Health Community-Based Family Planning Toolkit shares evidence-based guidance and tools for implementing community-based family planning programs.

The online Toolkit presents selected resources for health policy makers, programme managers, service providers, information officers, and others through navigation of the following resource categories:

  1. CBFP Strategies, including community-based distribution services, mobile services, community depots, and private sector partnerships.
  2. Policy & Advocacy - Policymakers will find research and information to help set national guidelines about CBFP programs and plan for future changes in service delivery.
  3. Program Design & Management - Programme managers will find information and job aids to help them design, plan, and manage CBFP programmes.
  4. Counseling & Services - Community health workers will find tools and job aids to help them provide quality services to their clients.
  5. Training - Trainers can review the latest curricula for training community health workers on family planning and reproductive health generally and for specific contraceptive methods.
  6. Monitoring & Evaluation
  7. Community Mobilization - Communication professionals can use the Toolkit resources to explore strategies, media, and messages about CBFP.
  8. Behavior Change Communication
  9. Country Experiences - CBFP advocates can find programming experiences from a number of regions, including Africa, Asia, Latin America & the Caribbean and Middle East, North Africa, and Europe.

The Toolkit also links to an e-learning course on global health and a Toolkit on Community-Based Access to Injectable Contraceptives.
