Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This handbook has been produced for a National Children's Rights Committee (NCRC) / Soul Buddyz advocacy training course. It discusses advocacy and how to develop an advocacy campaign.

Topics include:
  • The advocacy process
  • Developing an advocacy campaign

  • Tools for advocacy: Information and research; networking and forming alliances; building support (social mobilisation); lobbying; media advocacy; litigation; and the internet.

Soul Buddyz is a multi-media "edutainment" vehicle, from the Soul City Institute for Health and Development Communication, for children aged 8-12 years old. The Institute is a health promotion organisation which uses a mix of edutainment and advocacy to bring about social change.

The National Children's Rights Committee (NCRC) is a non-governmental organisation working to: advocate children's rights; lobby government; partner with government and all relevant organisations on child related issues of poverty, well-being, and legislation; uphold children's rights where applicable especially in media; plan and hold workshops; and implement the National Plan of Action.
