Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
"40 Years of Diffusion of Innovations" is a special edition of the "Journal of Health Communication". It analyses the Diffusions of Innovations (DOI) theory as it applies to and meets the emerging challenges of the 21st century, from chronic health conditions to new emerging infections diseases, including those related to bioterrorism. According to Everett M. Rogers, founder of DOI theory, "New applications of the diffusion model are constantly occurring, with yet newer innovations and applications becoming available to study." Dr. Haider, professor and project director, DOI, adds, "DOI is one of the powerful communication theories which has profound impact across the globe in public health communication interventions. This journal reviews the lessons learned and provides potential use in the 21st century."

This issue of the "Journal of Health Communication" aims to:
  • Integrate careful analysis and insightful commentary from leading public health officials and scholars, so that present day public health threats do not become tomorrow's epidemic realities.
  • Serve as a useful guide in proposal development and practicality.
  • Explore the profound impact the DOI model has had on the promotion of innovative health practices that encourage “pro-social” behaviors and lifestyle. The model has found wide appeal and has been praised in various areas, including communication, agriculture, marketing, education and health.
  • Provide valuable insight for developing future strategies to promote the role of the DOI model.
  • Bring together an intricate network of interdisciplinary experts, practitioners and researchers from an international field.
